The New York Jets did a lot of good things for their fans and for football bettors last season, which they closed out with a 9-7 record, both straight up and against the spread.
But the Jets weren’t finished or satisfied with just an unexpected solid regular season.
The Jets earned a NFL Playoff berth as a Wild Card team and shocked everyone – including some NFL Betting fans – by winning two straight playoff games, led by rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.
First, the Jets beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-14 in the AFC Wildcard playoff game, and then a week later, New York started to make believers of people when they scored a big upset by beating the San Diego Chargers 17-14 on the road in the AFC Divisional round playoffs.
Then, miraculously, the Jets found themselves in the AFC Championship game, taking on the mighty Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, who at that time were favored to win the Super Bowl. And the Jets almost pulled off what surely would have been one of the greatest upsets in NFL history, but eventually lost 30-17 to the Colts, who went on to lose Super Bowl XLIV against the New Orleans Saints.
One of the keys to New York’s success in 2009 was a stellar defense – a defense that ranked 1st in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 252.3 yards a game. The defense was first against the pass, allowing only 153.7 yards through the air.
The Jets were also excellent on offense. A solid offensive line allowed the Jets to have the No. 1 rushing attack in the NFL, averaging an outstanding 172.3 yards per game. Although the offensive line usually did a good job of protecting Sanchez on passing plays, it could do little about the pivot’s inconsistent arm, as the rookie struggled at time throughout the regular season and the Jets finished 31st in the NFL in passing with just 148.8 yards passing per game.
In the 2010 NFL season, the Jets will miss running backs Leon Washington and Thomas Jones, who they lost in free agency, as well as starting guard Alan Faneca. The Jets brought in veteran LaDainian Tomlinson to back up at RB.
In NFL Betting, sportsbooks have the Jets’ 2010 regular-season win projection at 9.5 wins, with the over/under at -115.
Bodog sportsbook has the New York Jets at 10-1 odds to win the Super Bowl in 2010, 11-2 odds to win the AFC Championship, and +130 co-favorites with the New England Patriots to win the AFC East division.
The Jets, members of the AFC East division, play home and away against the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. The AFC East will play against the AFC North and NFC North in the 2010 regular season. That means the Jets will have home games against the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers, and road games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.
The Jets finished second in the AFC East last season which means they face the two other second place teams from the AFC – a home game against the Houston Texans and a road trip against the Denver Broncos.
The Jets will be featured on Monday Night Football on three occasions with home games against Baltimore and Minnesota and a road trip to New England.
